Description

The glorious epic style of Cecil B. DeMille is exemplified in this story of the Bible's legendary strongman and the woman who seduces, then betrays him. Victor Mature is the classic Samson, muscular and fearless in his barehanded battle with a lion, his single-handed assault on a thousand Philistine soldiers, his struggle with a giant, and the spectacular Old Testament climax where he pulls down the pagan temple. The enormous cast and the splendor of the production adds to the spectacle. And Delilah, the irresistible lady with the scissors, is brought to seductive life by lovely Hedy Lamarr.

Cecil B. DeMille is one of the all time greats from the Golden Era of Hollywood. Don't put too much weight into the Rotten reviews from Rotten Tomatoes, above. Take note of the date that reviews were written. The movie was released in 1949. The criticisms noted in those reviews speak to the acting styles used by actors of that time. Actors and actresses that espoused those qualities were sought out and hired. Directors and producers actively sought them out. The critic(s) obviously forgot that, or don't understand it. The movie is a classic, with all the pagentry and glamour of the age. Its wonderful. Movies like this aren't made any more, despire the introduction of technology that may replace all the pagentry.
